A mediaevalist trying to be a philosopher and a philosopher trying to be a mediaevalist write about theology, philosophy, scholarship, books, the middle ages, and especially the life, times, and thought of the Doctor Subtilis, the Blessed John Duns Scotus.

Todd Bates
In case you haven't already heard, Todd Bates recently died. See Brandon Watson's blog for details. Bates was a contributor to the Cambridge Companion to Duns Scotus and recently published a book on Scotus' theory of universals.
I wouldn't recommend buying it, not at that price. I've flipped through it; it's pretty short, which makes the price even more outrageous. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. If you want an exposition of what Scotus says on universals, then read Noone's essay in the Cambridge Companion. But if you want engagement with contemporary analytic philosophy in a scotistic vein, then go for it.

Thank you for the unfortunate information. May he rest in peace.
Would you or Dr. Sullivan recommend the book?
